Efficient Solutions for the Oil and Gas Industry

Base Oils – Technical Overview and Industrial Significance

Base oils are the essential raw materials in the formulation of lubricants, serving as the primary medium through which additive systems function to deliver specific performance characteristics. They are produced either through solvent refining, hydrocracking, or synthetic chemical processes, and are categorized into various groups (Group I to Group V) based on their production method, saturation level, sulfur content, and viscosity index.

Mineral base oils—particularly solvent neutral grades such as SN150, SN500, and SN600—are widely used in automotive engine oils, industrial gear and hydraulic fluids, compressor oils, marine lubricants, and process oils. Their properties, including viscosity, pour point, flash point, volatility, and oxidation stability, play a decisive role in the thermal and mechanical performance of lubricants under varying operating conditions.

Each base oil grade in our portfolio has been selected and tested to meet international standards and industry-specific technical requirements. This section provides detailed specifications and application notes for our available SN-grade base oils, designed to support lubricant formulators, blenders, and industrial users seeking consistent quality and optimal performance.

Virgin vs. re-refined base oils

Base oils are the foundational components of lubricants, and their quality directly impacts the performance, longevity, and stability of finished products. Understanding the difference between Virgin Base Oils and Re-Refined Base Oils (RRBO) is crucial for lubricant manufacturers, industrial users, and procurement specialists.

Virgin Base Oils are produced directly from crude oil through processes such as solvent refining, hydrocracking, or hydroprocessing. These oils exhibit high purity, excellent oxidation stability, consistent viscosity index (VI), and minimal impurities. They are widely used in high-performance applications across automotive, industrial, marine, and power generation sectors.

Re-Refined Base Oils, on the other hand, are derived from the treatment and purification of used lubricating oils. Using advanced technologies such as vacuum distillation and hydrotreating, high-quality RRBOs can achieve physical and chemical properties close to those of virgin oils. However, their performance may vary depending on the quality of the feedstock and the rigor of the refining process.

Key differences include:
- Source: Virgin oils come from crude oil; RRBOs come from used lubricants.
- Processing: Virgin oils undergo primary refining; RRBOs require removal of contaminants, additives, and degradation products.
- Purity: Virgin oils offer superior purity; RRBOs may contain residual compounds unless refined thoroughly.
- Cost and Sustainability: RRBOs are more cost-effective and environmentally sustainable, making them suitable for non-critical applications.
- Applications: Virgin oils are preferred for OEMs and high-demand machinery; RRBOs are ideal for general-purpose lubricants, greases, and industrial uses.

Here, we focus on Virgin Base Oils, particularly solvent neutral (SN) grades such as SN150, SN500, SN600, and others. These grades are selected for their reliable performance, broad applicability, and conformity to international standards. The following pages provide detailed technical specifications for each product to support your formulation, blending, and procurement processes.
